Task Forces - Muslim Accomodations Task Force (MATF)

Current Leader:
Majed Afana
Scope: As college students, on a typical day we pray, eat, and study. Each of these activities can become a trying experience for
Muslim students struggling to adhere to the basics of Islam. Where will I
pray? What will I eat? Will I be able to
take a class on Islam or Arabic?
Over the years, dedicated individuals nationwide have worked to help ease
these daily struggles for Muslim students at their respective campuses. The
Prophet (pbuh) said, "He who finds relief for one who is hard pressed,
Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter." (Sahih Muslim Book
035, Number 6518 ). Unlike MSA events that can be organized over a weekend
(though not ideal, such events are possible), working toward Muslim
accommodations typically takes weeks, months, and even years. We pray that the leaders of these initiatives will be
rewarded with ease in Hereafter. Ameen.
We invite Muslim students, their colleagues, educators and administrators
alike to discover how visionary Muslim student leaders and colleges and
universities have worked hand in hand to make campuses across the country
more accommodating for their student body.
Past Accomplishments:
Due to MSA efforts and the gracious support of UMD administration, current
accommodations on campus for Muslims include:
Ramadan
Iftar Accommodations
Room accommodations for Muslims to break
their
fast together at sunset for the month of Ramadan
Weekly
Jummah (Friday Prayer)
Accommodations
Room accommodations throughout the school
year
Reflection
Room:
The Reflection Room is located on the
second floor of
the University Center and is open to students of
all
faiths for prayer.
Halal
Food
Halal burgers, chicken, and hot dogs are
available
upon request at the University Center's Grill
Works.
MSA's former MATF chair, Nadia
Bazzy, worked with the Women's Resource Center to conduct survey research of
the campus population, regarding the specific needs of Muslim students. Now,
Muslims are able to use the Reflection room for prayer and can ask for halal
food in the University Center.
