·         Shows importance of community, tolerance for one another

Now, I’d like to take you all on a trip, and I really want you to go with me, spiritually back 1417 years ago, where our Master, Messenger, Beloved, Role Model, spoke to his people. In the year 10 H., when the Prophet went to Mecca for Hajj (pilgrimage), he met 140,000 Muslims there, who had come from different parts of Arabia to fulfill their religious obligation. He addressed to them his celebrated sermon, in which he gave a resume of his teachings: "Belief in One God without images or symbols, equality of all the Believers without distinction of race or class, the superiority of individuals being based solely on piety; sanctity of life, property and honor; abolition of interest, and of vendettas and private justice; better treatment of women; obligatory inheritance and distribution of the property of deceased persons among near relatives of both sexes, and removal of the possibility of the accumulation of wealth in the hands of the few." The Quran and the conduct of the Prophet were to serve as the bases of law and a healthy criterion in every aspect of human life.

As the prophet Muhammad (SAW) was getting older, he knew that what he had accomplished so far, was for a certain goal or purpose.  He knew that his purpose in this life was to convey Allah (SWT) message to the people.  Through the many trials and tribulations that came upon him, he persevered.  In the prophets last sermon you can see simple standards, simple actions that we can use in our everyday life.  Not harming others so we won’t be harmed, not making other people feel inferior.  He is our role model, he is our beloved, and he is our standard that we should try to compare ourselves to.  In the Quran it states:  An’am-6:48. Wama nursilu almursaleena illa mubashshireena wamunthireena faman amana wa aslaha fala khawfun 3alayhim wala hum yahzanoona.  We do not send the messengers except as deliverers of good news, as well as warners. Those who believe and reform have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

If you look at the people that surrounded him, his wives and the sahabah (may Allah be pleased with all of them), you will notice that they were regular human beings just like you and I.  They can serve as our models as well.  These are people who would die to protect the Prophet (SAW).  These are those who would comfort the Prophet (SAW).  These are people who would learn from him.  These are the people who are looked up to for simply being in the same generation as our Prophet (SAW).  The character of the sahaba was such that upon hearing that true imaan can only be achieved through loving the Messenger (SAW) more than everything except Allah (SWT), including ones self, Umar ® quickly complied with that commandment.  The sahaba wasted no time when it came down to doing what was pleasing to Allah (SWT) and the Prophet (PBUH).  The great sahabah that we are talking about, are the people who would be concerned of their status in the Eyes of Allah (SWT).  We need to take a lesson from the past, and we need to be educated on those who are great influences to society – Muslim and Non Muslim.  People with great moral character should be looked up to.  Whether it means to learn world history, or learn about past presidents, we should have an idea of what goes on around us.  Once in a while we should try picking up a newspaper and read what they say about Islam, about the economy, and about issues concerning us, the American public.  If we can’t do that, we can at least subscribe through online to get emails sent to us.  It is very important that we know what goes on around us.

I ask that Allah (SWT) guide us to the straight path and keep us away from that which is forbidden.

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD'S LAST SERMON

(This Sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul Hijjah 10 A.H in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat )

"O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I don't know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you carefully and TAKE THIS WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. ALLAH has forbidden you to take usury (Interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived...

Beware of Satan, for your safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have right over you. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to commit adultery.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship ALLAH, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. You know that every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. YOU ARE ALL EQUAL. NOBODY HAS SUPERIORITY OVER OTHER EXCEPT BY PIETY AND GOOD ACTION.  (example of surah asr)

1. By Al-'Asr (the time).

2. Verily! Man is in loss,

3. Except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth (i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma'rûf)which Allah has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar)which Allah has forbidden), and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allah’s Cause during preaching His religion of Islamic Monotheism or Jihad, etc.).

Remember, one day you will appear before ALLAH and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, NO PROPHET OR APOSTLE WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand my words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QUR'AN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me direcly. BE MY WITNESS O ALLAH THAT I HAVE CONVEYED YOUR MESSAGE TO YOUR PEOPLE."

A few weeks after giving this talk, the prophet SAW passed away, in this month that we are in now, Safar.

In an era where everyone was at war with each other, the Prophet offered them Islam.  He offered them peace.  He SAW established a state in which the mind was one with the body, where traders were friends with their business partners, where women were looked at with respect, he adopted a law in which justice was a norm, for all, Muslim and non Muslim, Arab and non Arab, white and black, a way of life where he practiced what he preached.

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me aright and grant me sustenance.  Allahumma In-nee a-toobu ilayka minha la ar-ji-u ilayhaa abadaO Allah, I repent before You for all my sins and I promise never to return to the same (again).  Surely with every hardship there is relief.  O Allah!! Behold I ask You for the good through Your Knowledge, and for ability through Your Power, and beg (Your favour) out of Your infinite Bounty. For surely You have Power; We have none. You know all; We know not. You are the Great Knower of all things.  O Allah! If in Your Knowledge there are matters good for our faith (Deen), for our livelihood, and for the consequences of our affairs, then ordain it for us, and make it easy for us, and bless us therein.  But if in Your Knowledge, this matter be bad for our faith (Deen) for our livelihood, and for the consequences of our affairs, then turn it away from us, and turn us away there from, and ordain for us the good wherever it be, and cause us to be pleased therewith.  Our Lord! Lay not upon us such a burden as You did lay upon those before us. Ameen Ya Rab Al AlameenYa Allah please give us the strength we need to proceed in order to succeed as you are the All Provider.  Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear, grant us forgiveness and have mercy on us. You are our Protector. Help us against those who deny the truth.  Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate from the truth after You have guided us, and bestow upon us mercy from Your grace. Verily You are the Giver of bounties without measure.  Our Lord! In You we have placed our trust, and to You do we turn in repentance, for unto You is the end of all journeys.  Our Lord! Perfect our light for us and forgive us our sins, for verily You have power over all things.  To Him we belong and to Him we return.

Ameen, wa Aqeema Salaat.
