Asif Sheikh
Brotherhood Coordinator

List organizational experience within the MSA-UMD (include positions, responsibilities, and accomplishments, please be specific, outlining in detail what you individually did/accomplished):
I haven’t had the chance to work much with the MSA-UMD, but I have been able to help with the events whenever possible, sitting at the recruiting table, etc.

List work/volunteer experience (include positions, responsibilities and accomplishments in other organizations on or off campus)

Being a freshman in UMD, I have not taken advantage of all the clubs throughout the campus. In high school, however, I worked with many clubs and was a board member (including positions such as representative, president, and vice president) of many of them including Student Council, Math Club, and many more.

What are your organizational strengths? Weaknesses?

I am able to find volunteers for events and am able to work with other groups in order to attain a, example, date for an event. I am tidy and am very good at scheduling. My weaknesses include a hint of procrastination when it comes to smaller things.

How do you cope and work under pressure (please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)?

I tend to take pressure and let it dissolve. Really. But if there is a chance of any stress, I tend to brush it off and work at my usual pace.

How well do you multi task (please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)?

Multitasking is something I’m not amazing at, but I’m not bad at. I can easily eat while television but unfortunately, driving and typing emails on the other hand is a daunting experience.

How do you deal with criticism (please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)?

I tend to take it as constructive criticism. No, I will not start a fight, but I would rather learn from the criticism and improve upon what I did wrong. For example, in my high school I had to design a fundraising idea. I ended up choosing a bake sale. Little did I know I left a fork in the giant batch of brownies. I got criticism for it, yes, but the next time I made brownies I made sure there were not any utensils left in the baking pan.

What will your schedule look like in the 2010-2011 school year? How many hours can you dedicate to the MSA if you are elected? List any external factors such as parents, school, or work that might inhibit your work.

My schedule will probably be the same as I have now meaning I can dedicate as much time as needed by MSA. I work well with time management and in the rare occasion that procrastination occurs, I tend to get the objective done efficiently as if procrastination did not occur. InshAllah there won’t be anything holding be back from doing as much as I can with MSA.

What does MSA mean to you? Why are you getting involved with MSA, other than the fact that you were nominated?

MSA means uniting Muslims and non-Muslims together. I am getting involved with MSA both to spread awareness of this religion, and for God.

What do you feel the MSA executive board positions you are running for entails, and why do you feel you are capable of holding such a position?

I feel that I would be a great person for Brotherhood as I am able to work well with people. I’ve worked as a representative before for many organizations which gives me some sort of experience with working with others.

What are the main reasons you want to be elected as an MSA executive board member? Include future plans you have in respect to the position.
I’ve always been a great supporter of MSA and have helped the members and the organization as a whole whenever possible. My future plans include getting more brothers involved with this organization and to get ‘the word’ out there in a more efficient way.

If you lose the elections, what will your course of action be towards the organization (please specify)?

I will still help out the organization and will still attend the events, no doubt about that.

If you are elected, will your parent(s) be supportive of your work with the organization?

Yes, InshAllah.

What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of MSA-UMD?

Strengths include having events that are well managed and planned out. Weaknesses include publicity of the actual organizations, because even though UMD has many Muslims, we lack many potential members.

Have you fully read & understood the constitution, have you specifically understood your duties/responsibilities?

I have, yes.

How well do you work with others? Give an example of when you led a team and how you delegated responsibilities and ensure team cohesiveness.

I work very well with others and I tend to look at the long term effects, not just the short term. I’ve been on many organizations through high school and have been president of a few. For example, I was the founder and president of the Diversity Club of John Glenn High School

Which Islamic school of thought do you subscribe to, and what is you viewpoint in regards to other schools of thought?

I consider myself mainly Hanafi with some characteristics taken from Shafi`i. It is stated that the differences between the different schools is considered a blessing and I completely agree with that. I believe all the schools of thought are correct.
