Reem Mohammadieh
Sisterhood Coordinator

List organizational experience within the MSA-UMD (include positions, responsibilities, and accomplishments, please be specific, outlining in detail what you individually did/accomplished):
I have not yet had the opportunity to hold a position for MSA, however I have helped with MSA events in the past, attended on-campus Jummah’s as well as meetings- and worked to assist the MSA in any way possible.

What are your organizational strengths? Weaknesses?

I would consider my organizational strength to be able to plan things well ahead of time and work in set intervals. Given a reasonable time period to reach deadlines, I work efficiently and well with others- however my weaknesses include getting off track and losing sight of any long-term results while paying more attention to minor details.

How do you cope and work under pressure (please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)?

Working under pressure can often seem overwhelming to me, however I have found that I work best when I have set deadlines and other people depending on me. Being a student, I’ve become accustomed to studying and working at my own pace, however working under pressure is sometimes when I get my best work done.

How well do you multi task (please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)?

My usual given attention span allows me to multitask and in turn get more work done. By switching between situations I’ve always been able to keep one foot in front of the next and handle things in a more accommodating way. Multitasking can often seem tedious, however the constant change between separate tasks keeps me working for longer periods of time.

How do you deal with criticism (please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)?
Initially criticism is difficult for me to handle, however dealing with harsh criticism has made me a stronger person. I spend a lot of time making sure others are satisfied with my work which is why criticism does me well. By receiving feedback on something I can work on, or something that I need help with I have been able to apply other peoples criticism in a positive way and in turn become a stronger person due to the criticism I’ve received.

What will your schedule look like in the 2010-2011 school year? How many hours can you dedicate to the MSA if you are elected? List any external factors such as parents, school, or work that might inhibit your work.

Typically I take 12-15 credit hours a semester, which gives me a good amount of time to dedicate to MSA, however external factors like parents would suggest that meetings that extend into the evening, or events that go late at night may be difficult to work around. If I were elected as Sisterhood, I would put in the necessary hours by attending meetings, and working with other E-Board members to ensure that work gets done.

What does MSA mean to you? Why are you getting involved with MSA, other than the fact that you were nominated?

To me, being involved in an Islamic community has been important from a young age. I think it is essential for students to be able to provide leadership in their own organizations and be able to work together for a common goal, which is why I’d like to get involved in MSA. I believe that for a lot of our lives, Muslim youth has always had other people pushing them in the right direction- and college is the time to take the initiative and push ourselves in the right direction.

What do you feel the MSA executive board positions you are running for entails, and why do you feel you are capable of holding such a position?

Running for executive board entails a certain amount of responsibility and dedication to the MSA. By running for Sisterhood I am willing to meet the demands of the organization by attending meetings and working with other members of the E-Board to ensure that the U of M Dearborn MSA can meet its full potential.
What are the main reasons you want to be elected as an MSA executive board member? Include future plans you have in respect to the position.
I feel like the role of Sisterhood has a huge amount of influence in general MSA member participation, and in running for executive board I intend on trying to have more members attend MSA socials and volunteer events. The main reason I want to me on the MSA E-Board is to increase student involvement in the Muslim Student Association.

If you lose the elections, what will your course of action be towards the organization (please specify)?

The Muslim Student Association is about working together as an organization, which is why if I don’t get the position I am running for I still intend to work with and be a participating member of MSA.

If you are elected, will your parent(s) be supportive of your work with the organization?

Yes.

What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of MSA-UMD?

Since I’ve started at U of M Dearborn I have attended MSA events, Jummahs, and meetings- trying to be a part of the organization as much as possible, however I feel that the MSA is lacking a lot of the same enthusiasm from other Muslims on campus. While the core of MSA-UMD is strong, with a hard working E-board and successful events- general member involvement is not nearly as high as it could be.

Have you fully read & understood the constitution, have you specifically understood your duties/responsibilities?

Yes.

How well do you work with others? Give an example of when you led a team and how you delegated responsibilities and ensure team cohesiveness.

I would consider myself to work well with others because I don’t lose sight of my own interests- while also paying attention to other people’s concerns. I am firm in where I stand, which is important when listening to different viewpoints, but I also know how to look at situations from different perspectives and compromise with others. More specifically, I have previously lead others on my lacrosse team to work together and share responsibility to achieve our common goal.

Which Islamic school of thought do you subscribe to, and what is you viewpoint in regards to other schools of thought?

I subscribe to the Hanifi school of thought; however I believe that Islam is meant to bring unity under the submission to Allah, which is why I see no need to differentiate other sisters and brothers in Islam by which madh’hab they practice.
