MSA-UMD Elections 2008 - Candidates

Osama Alkatib
Information Technology

List Organizational Experience within the MSA-UMD (Include positions, responsibilities, and accomplishments, please be specific, outlining in detail what you individually did/accomplished):

Within the MSA, I would volunteer my time when it is needed, and try to help as much as possible when available.

List Work/Volunteer Experience (Include positions, responsibilities, and
accomplishments in other organizations on or off campus)

Off campus, I have been involved in handling IT operations at the Islamic Center or Detroit (ICD), by taking care of servers, and also providing support for the Infrastructure of the ICD, by creating it, and also supporting it. I furthermore manage component of the ICD site, and provide global support and guidance to the IT team. I have been involved with many Islamic Organizations, and tried to volunteer my time, and skills when possible.

What are your organizational strengths? Weaknesses?

When it comes to organizational discipline I'm extremely organized with my work, and try to develop and deliver any project I'm on as professional as possible. When my work load increased dramatically I try to organize and work in a systematic manner. Some of my weaknesses is to assign work to others when the load becomes way too much for one person to handle.

How do you cope and work under pressure? (Please answer in full   thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

I work really well under pressure, Sometimes I would have to balance school, work, and volunteer work for other organizations all at once.

How well do you multi task? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

I multi task really well, I'm usually working on multiple things at once, like answering an urgent call, working on completing a project, and creating something else on a server.

How do you deal with criticism? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

I take criticisms in, and try to better my self, looking at my friends; I sometimes get criticized by them for doing something, so I try to correct my actions.

What will your schedule look like in the 2008-2009 school year?  How many hours can you dedicate to the MSA if you are elected? List any external factors such as parents, school, or work that might inhibit your work.

I will be able to allocate about 5-7 hours a week to the MSA, as I'm extremely busy with school, work, and also working on other on going projects. But Inshallah the MSA will get its priority.

What does MSA mean to you? Why are you getting involved with MSA,  other than the fact that you were nominated?

The MSA means to me that we as MSA'ers represent Islam on Campus, so in essence when people see a person from the MSA doing something wrong, it not only reflects upon you, but reflects on all of us Muslims, and Islam. So I'm getting involved with the MSA to learn and benefit from the experience, and also give back to our fellow Muslims on campus.

What do you feel the MSA executive board positions you are running  for entails, and why do you feel you are capable of holding such a
position?

I believe it entails marinating their current IT structure, which consists of the Website, the MSA computer, and any other technology going from hardware or software the MSA uses or needs I feel that I have the capabilities of holding the IT position, as I have the background in IT, and also did my undergrad in Computer Science, and have worked for IT positions in the past.

What are the main reasons you want to be elected as an MSA  executive board member? Include future plans you have in respect to  the position.

The main reason for me to be part of the MSA executive board, is to give back to the Muslims Students on campus, by bettering our current IT tools, and create innovative ways for the MSA to function and flourish on campus.

If you lose the elections, what will your course of action be towards the organization (please specify)?

I will congratulate the person who won, and to ask Allah to give the strength and will for him/her to benefit the Muslims on Campus, and Ask Allah to help the MSA continue to be a successful Muslim organization on Campus.

If you are elected, will your parent(s) be supportive of your work with the
organization?

Yes, Inshallah they will be supportive of my work with the organization.

What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of MSA-UMD?

MSA Dearborn's strengths are it is well respective organization on campus that strives towards representing Islam on campus, and does everything in a professional matter. I believe some of its weakness is its starting to lack the essence of its events that its holds.

Have you fully read & understood the constitution, have you specifically understood your duties/responsibilities?

Yes, Inshallah

How well do you work with others? Give an example of when you led  a team and how you delegated responsibilities and ensure team
cohesiveness.

I work extremely well with others, an example of that is coordinating with the ICD IT team, by communicating with them any needed actions or changes, and also helping them with their needs, in an Islamic organization any action that is usually done must be approved by the Board, and so on, I must not only communicate with the IT team, but also communicate with the Board of the masjed, as they have to also approve the projects, and provide the funding necessary to complete them.

Which Islamic school of thought do you subscribe to, and what is  your viewpoint in regards to other schools of thought?

I am a Muslim, who follows Ahlu-Sunnah wal-Jamma, I believe in Unity, as in Islam we are united, and as the Prophet (sAw) characterized the Ummah as one body, and when one part of the body ails, the whole body ails.

Hadith Of The Week

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 215:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

(who fought in twelve Ghazawat in the company of the Prophet). I heard four things from the Prophet and they won my admiration. He said;

1. "No lady should travel on a journey of two days except with her husband or a Dhi-Mahram;

2. "No fasting is permissible on the two days of Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Adha;

3. "No prayer (may be offered) after the morning compulsory prayer until the sun rises; and no prayer after the 'Asr prayer till the sun sets;

4. "One should travel only for visiting three Masajid (Mosques): Masjid-ul-Haram (Mecca), Masjid-ul-Aqsa (Jerusalem), and this (my) Mosque (at Medina)."
