MSA-UMD Elections 2008 - Candidates

Marwa El-Sharkawy
Education

List Organizational Experience within the MSA-UMD (Include positions,responsibilities, and accomplishments, please be specific, outlining in detail what you individually did/accomplished):

I am freshman, so I have not held any positions on the board yet. For the last two semesters I often attended meetings and socials when time permitted. I volunteered at the unity in diversity dinner, where I helped with serving food.

List Work/Volunteer Experience (Include positions, responsibilities, and
accomplishments in other organizations on or off campus)

I have always been active in the community where I live, often helping out at events such as fundraising dinners, workshops, camps, lectures, as well as volunteering time at preschools, nursing homes, and participation in humanitarian day. I was an active member in the Franklin and Unity Center chapter MYNAs. l helped with the establishment of an MSA at my high school, so students could have an on campus juma’a. Currently I work at CVS pharmacy as a technician and prior to that worked at a bakery café for 11 months.

What are your organizational strengths? Weaknesses?

I am the type of person who likes to see things get done quickly, but efficiently, and on time. I like to see things done right and beyond what is expected. I work very hard for what I want and achieving all my goals is important to me. I work well with others as long as every one does their part and has their input. A weakness I have is that sometimes I get carried away and just want to do everything myself, because I cant rely on others or don’t think they can get it done, even though I’m sure they can. Inshallah that shouldn’t be a problem because I have seen the eboard and members work and they are almost always realiable.

How do you cope and work under pressure? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

I think I work well under pressure, although I usually try not to put my self in a situation where I will have to be under pressure. I like to have things planned out and know when I should have them done so It wont be left to the last second. But unfortunately it does often happen where we do become stressed and under pressure and have to work extra hard, sometimes I see it as a boost to remind me to get going and get things get done on time and well.

How well do you multi task? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

Over the past few years I have learned to multitask pretty well, even though I like to be able to concentrate on a certain task at a time, it is sometimes necessary to multitask, and I don’t have a problem with it.

How do you deal with criticism? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

I handle criticism very well, I actually welcome it, because I feel it is the only way one can learn from their experience and mistakes. There is always room for improvement and the best way to know where you need to improve is from someone else telling you.

What will your schedule look like in the 2008-2009 school year? How many hours can you dedicate to the MSA if you are elected? List any external factors such as parents, school, or work that might inhibit your work.

I plan to take 12-15 credits along with working part time 2-3 days a week. I feel that I will be able to dedicate whatever time is necessary to the MSA and its success.

What does MSA mean to you? Why are you getting involved with MSA, other than the fact that you were nominated?

MSA is a way to bring both the Muslims and non Muslims together through different educational, social, and outreach events. It also helps to promote understanding and tolerance within campus and the community. I got involved with the MSA this year to be able to make a difference and help in achieving such goals. It is also a way to meet new people and gain more volunteer, organizational and leadership experiences.

What do you feel the MSA executive board positions you are running for entails, and
why do you feel you are capable of holding such a position?

I feel that this position requires very good organizational and planning skills as well as patience and the ability to work well with others. Also needs someone who is open, outgoing and gets along with all kinds of different and new people. This position is responsible for providing events and activities for people to learn more about Islam and get questions answered.  I feel that I have these skills and have many ideas and input to offer, and this was one of the only positions I was really interested in.

What are the main reasons you want to be elected as an MSA executive board member? Include future plans you have in respect to the position.

I have many ideas and plans I want to initiate. While I would like to keep the weekly halqas going I would also like to see some education events be on a larger scale with a lot more people participating. I also want to attract more non Muslims to such events to bring out Islam awareness. Some ideas I have for getting more people at events is to give them incentive with things like prizes, raffles, etc. inshallah i plan to have important relevant topics to today’s society discussed and bring in a diverse group of different speakers at events.

If you lose the elections, what will your course of action be towards the organization (please specify)?

I will still be very active in the msa and help out as much as possible, and still put my ideas out there.

If you are elected, will your parent(s) be supportive of your work with the
organization?

Yes, my parents always support anything that will be beneficial to me and the Muslim community.

What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of MSA-UMD?

A strength is the great job they do planning numerous events throughout the year. Have many different ideas that are beneficial to everyone. And the large events always have a successful turnout.

A weakness is I think the msa needs to bring in more, new active members and get larger amounts of different people coming to smaller on campus events.

Have you fully read & understood the constitution, have you specifically understood your duties/responsibilities?

Yes

How well do you work with others? Give an example of when you led a team and how you delegated responsibilities and ensure team cohesiveness.

I work very well with others as long as everyone does their part, and works as hard as needed to get the job done. It is important to have groups or teams to work on certain tasks, and everyone should be responsible.

Which Islamic school of thought do you subscribe to, and what is your viewpoint in regards to other schools of thought?

I am Muslim. I respect all schools of thought and all Muslims. We all need to work together as one to achieve our goals as an Ummah. I don’t see why this question is necessary or its relevance to the elections.

Hadith Of The Week

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 215:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

(who fought in twelve Ghazawat in the company of the Prophet). I heard four things from the Prophet and they won my admiration. He said;

1. "No lady should travel on a journey of two days except with her husband or a Dhi-Mahram;

2. "No fasting is permissible on the two days of Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Adha;

3. "No prayer (may be offered) after the morning compulsory prayer until the sun rises; and no prayer after the 'Asr prayer till the sun sets;

4. "One should travel only for visiting three Masajid (Mosques): Masjid-ul-Haram (Mecca), Masjid-ul-Aqsa (Jerusalem), and this (my) Mosque (at Medina)."
