MSA-UMD Elections 2008 - Candidates

Abrar Founas
Vice President

List Organizational Experience within the MSA-UMD (Include positions, responsibilities, and accomplishments, please be specific, outlining in detail what you individually did/accomplished):

In the past year, I have served as the Finance chair. My responsibilities including updating the executive board on money going in and out of the organization, creating budgets for events throughout the year, and allocating money to each eboarder. I spent a great deal of time creating binders which included sponsorship information for Unity In Diversity. These binders include all past documentation: flyers, advertisements, newspaper articles, and mission of MSA.

List Work/Volunteer Experience (Include positions, responsibilities, and accomplishments in other organizations on or off campus):

I have been a very active member in the Muslim community over the past seven years. I started off at the ICD youth group as treasurer. Later I joined Franklin MYNA where I was secretary then vice-president. I started the Unity Center chapter of MYNA as president and I participated in MMYC throughout those years. I worked very closely with Islamic Relief and organized numerous Fundraisers, which were extremely successful alhamdulillah. In the past few months I’ve had the chance to work closely with CAIR-MI and am currently helping Islamic Relief with a fundraiser for Africa. I attend most community service activities, socials, and educational events.

What are your organizational strengths? Weaknesses?

I think it is very important to dedicate as much time and energy as needed to get the work done. I find that to be one of my strengths, for the most part I do more than the bare minimum. One weakness is that over time my level of tolerance starts to go downhill J If someone displays irresponsible habits repeatedly I don’t trust them to get the job done and think its fair to hand it over to someone more willing and able.

How do you cope and work under pressure? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations):

I work well under pressure. Events should always be planned with adequate time to organize. Sometimes we need that little push to get the job done because we’ve given ourselves too much time to slack off. Recently I helped with a workshop where registration was looking really low two days before the event. In less than 48 hours I was able to get over 40 more people to register.

How well do you multi task? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

Some tasks need your undivided attention, but most of the time you can split your time and attention on various tasks. The key to this is time management. I can walk and talk at the same time ;)

How do you deal with criticism? (Please answer in full thoughts/sentences providing real-life examples/situations)

In an organization such as MSA we should be able to constructively criticize one another. I can accept criticism when I know its sincere and for the purpose of improving. On the other hand, I’ve noticed that criticism is given when people are lashing out which I don’t like at all.

What will your schedule look like in the 2008-2009 school year?

How many hours can you dedicate to the MSA if you are elected? List any external factors such as parents, school, or work that might inhibit your work.

I will be taking four classes each semester next year and two summer classes most likely. My work is fairly flexible. This year, I didn’t work so I could commit more time to MSA and my classes. I will dedicate as many hours as I need to get the job done, but I expect the same from others as well. It isn’t fair for me to put work, family, and my personal life aside and commit so much time to MSA if my fellow eboarders don’t do that as well. If each of us does our job, then we should all be fine.

What does MSA mean to you? Why are you getting involved with MSA, other than the fact that you were nominated?

MSA is my opportunity to get involved on this campus and try to make a difference. I hope in the near future that MSA will become very lively and will maintain the level of respect it has from the administration. I think we have great potential and can make a strong impact on our campus.

What do you feel the MSA executive board positions you are running for entails, and why do you feel you are capable of holding such a position?

The position I am running for demands a lot of time and dedication which I am willing to give to MSA. I would have to work closely with my fellow eboarders to ensure that each person completes their tasks in a timely manner and report back to the President. As a team we should be able to go off and complete our work and then report back to the group where we can then offer each other feedback and assistance. I understand that documentation is key for this position so I know I will spend the majority of my time making sure that everything is organized and up to date.

What are the main reasons you want to be elected as an MSA executive board member?

I don’t really care about being an “executive board member”; I am willing to commit to the organization regardless. I think my peers have noticed that I have leadership abilities and I can make a strong impact on MSA.

If you lose the elections, what will your course of action be towards the organization (please specify)?

I will still give my input, and be just as involved in events on and off campus. An organization can’t be strong without active general body members. I think its unfortunate that most people won’t attend events, meetings, or give any input because they aren’t on the board.

If you are elected, will your parent(s) be supportive of your work with the organization?

My family has a strong background working with MSA. My family has been and will continue to support not only my work but MSA as a whole.

What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of MSA-UMD?

MSA has a very strong background. We have so much potential but I think over the past few years have started to drift away from that. MSA has become inactive and members are reluctant to get involved.

Have you fully read & understood the constitution, have you specifically understood your duties/responsibilities?

Yes Sir/Ma’am J

How well do you work with others? Give an example of when you led a team and how you delegated responsibilities and ensure team cohesiveness.

I think I work fairly well with others and because of my experiences in the past I am able to delegate tasks others when it comes to events and projects. A team has to work together and everyone involved has to be comfortable with one another and willing to pull their weight and together get the job done.

Which Islamic school of thought do you subscribe to, and what is your viewpoint in regards to other schools of thought?

I don’t like to classify myself under a specific school of thought. I think all schools of thought should show a level of respect for one another. We shouldn’t focus on our differences, as Muslims we can work together and have a much stronger impact that way.

Hadith Of The Week

Volume 3, Book 31, Number 215:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

(who fought in twelve Ghazawat in the company of the Prophet). I heard four things from the Prophet and they won my admiration. He said;

1. "No lady should travel on a journey of two days except with her husband or a Dhi-Mahram;

2. "No fasting is permissible on the two days of Id-ul-Fitr and 'Id-ul-Adha;

3. "No prayer (may be offered) after the morning compulsory prayer until the sun rises; and no prayer after the 'Asr prayer till the sun sets;

4. "One should travel only for visiting three Masajid (Mosques): Masjid-ul-Haram (Mecca), Masjid-ul-Aqsa (Jerusalem), and this (my) Mosque (at Medina)."
